The new season begins but for me, the research won't start in earnest until we have 5/6 matches under our belts. Any research early doors will be based upon head to heads, last season's form and any major transfer news.
I said it yesterday, and I repeat today, in-play stats are the key early season. Betmaid is my weapon of choice as a free in-play stats resource. its only negative? It cannot be uploaded via a browser. It is a mobile/tablet app. Make sure you have your in-play stats feed to hand early season. I'll see you on twitter @drtclub with a caveat - were this a busy Saturday in the middle of the season, the English Championship would not get a look in! 15:00 start.

We begin with the most competitive league around. I will not be researching the Championship once the Elite European leagues are up and running. The Championship is an occasional foray for me during the season. It is simply too competitive.

15:00 - Wigan v Sheff Wed - 2.26 Wigan

  • Last head to head was February 2017, a Sheff Wed 0-1 win.
  • Newly promoted Wigan could, of course, be anything.
  • Only 6 away wins for mid-table Sheff Wed last season.
  • 6 wins in their last 9 matches ended last season on a high.
  • 15 goals conceded away by Sheff Wed last 1/2 hour last season. Have they solved this late leakage problem?
  • 65% over 1.5 goals away for Sheff Wed last season so take on any late 0-0?

15:00 - Preston v QPR - 1.97 Preston

  • 1-0 and 1-2 Preston last season. They did the double in tight matches. The 1-0 saw 2 QPR red cards. The 1-2 saw QPR score first.
  • Can we rely on a Preston fight back if conceding first today?
  • 7th v 16th last season. Preston missed out on the play-offs by 2 points.
  • Preston at home did not lose a match v 13th and lower last season.4 of their home defeats came v the top 6 so they may struggle v those likely to fill the higher places.
  • Only 3 away wins for QPR must be improved upon. Only 1 away win v the top 18 last season.
  • If it's 'as you were', then Preston should feel confident at home against teams unlikely to challenge for the play-off places.

15:00 - Millwall v Middlesbrough - 2.84 Millwall

  • An off-putting market in a competitive league!
  • This is 8th v 5th from last season. No wonder the market cannot split these 2 sides.
  • Millwall had an electric 2018, losing only 3 matches - 2 of those defeats came within their last 3 matches.
  • Only 4 home defeats last season, Millwall are clearly buoyed at the Den.
  • Their record v the top 7 saw only 1 loss at home.
  • 2-1 win at home and 2-0 loss away v Boro.
  • Boro scored 2 goals + in 5 of their last 6 matches last season. A good end.
  • They were dire away from home though v the top 14, winning only 2 matches. It was at home and v teams 15th and lower where Boro really flourished last season.
  • 2 top 10 teams last season makes this a toughie. Millwall's 2018 form though was exemplary. Can it carry on this season? Is the Den still a Fortress - only 4 home defeats?

15:00 - Bristol City v Nottm Forest - 2.64 Bristol City

  • 2.64 the favourite again tells us that this could be a tough puzzle to solve.
  • 11th v 17th from last season. 2-1 and 0-0 last season v Forest for Bristol City.
  • 7 wins and 3 draws at home v 15th and lower - if Forest have not improved, Bristol City may be able to record another win/draw.
  • Only 5 away wins for Forest last season. They did beat 1st in the league, 4 of their 5 away wins needed Forest to score 2-4-5-3 goals!
  • From last season's form, Bristol City should feel confident.

15:00 - Ipswich Town v Blackburn - 2.82 Ipswich Town

  • The 3rd consecutive match in which the market cannot split the teams.
  • 12th v 2nd in English League 1 (newly promoted).
  • Ipswich were unbeaten home and away v 20th and lower.
  • Tough to read how Blackburn will cope with this step up to this competitive league.

15:00 - Birmingham v Norwich City - 2.62 Birmingham

  • Yet another match the market cannot call.
  • 19th v 14th - are these 2 set to struggle this season?
  • v 10th-18th at home, Birmingham won 7 matches. They did lose to Norwich 0-2 though. Birmingham also lost 1-0 away.
  • 5 of Norwich's 7 away wins last season were 1-0. A real emphasis on defence. In contrast they conceded 4+ goals in 6 aways.
  • 2 teams unlikely to vye for the play-offs unless they improve markedly. A double for Norwich last season.

15:00 - West Brom v Bolton - 1.47 West Brom

  • Only 2 home losses for West Brom outside of the top 10 in the Premier League.
  • Bolton were 21st last season, surviving by 2 points.
  • Only 1 away win for Bolton last season.
  • West Brom look to be chock full of Premier League battle-hardened players. Gibbs; Robson-Kanu; Rondon; Chadli; Barry; Brunt; Livermore; that's a solid looking team for this league. Will they 'do a Newcastle?'

15:00 - Brentford v Rotherham - 1.54 Brentford

  • From a bunch of matches the market was unclear about, now we have another short odds favourite at home.
  • 9th v 4th from League 1 (newly promoted).
  • Only 3 home losses for Brentford last season.

17:30 - Sheff Utd v Swansea - 2.32 Sheff Utd

  • 10th v newly relegated Swansea.
  • 6 defeats at home last season for Sheff Utd.
  • Only 2 away wins for the Swans last year in the Premier league.

15:00 - Celtic v Livingston - 1.13 Celtic

  • Livingston are newly promoted.
  • Celtic were unbeaten at home last season.
  • 1.13 odds suggests 3/4 goals bare minimum from Celtic.
  • The last 2 head to heads were 10 years ago and Celtic scored 4 goals.

15:00 - St Mirren v Dundee - 2.64 St Mirren

  • First match of the season and 2.64 the favourite tells you to use in-play stats.
  • Newly promoted St Mirren takes on 9th placed Dundee from last season.
  • Dundee's away wins congregated around teams 8th and lower (in a league of 12). If we assume St Mirren are likely to be a bottom 5 side, this could be a good day for Dundee.
  • All speculation of course as we simply don't know how St Mirren will perform in the SPL.

15:00 - Hamilton v Hearts - 2.1 Hearts

  • 10th v 6th from last season.
  • Hamilton did not beat a top 6 side last season at home. 2 home losses v Hearts 1-2 and 0-3.
  • Only 1 loss for Hearts last season home and away v 8th and lower. They did score and concede away in 6 of 7 matches away v bottom 4 sides.
  • On last year's form, Hearts did the double at Hamilton. They did concede. If this continues, lay Hamilton if Hamilton scores first.

15:00 - Kilmarnock v St Johnstone - 2.14 Kilmarnock

  • 3 Kilmarnock wins in the last 4 head to heads, scoring 2+ goals.
  • This is 5th v 8th from last year.
  • Kilmarnock did beat Celtic and Rangers at home last season (but also lost to Celtic at home too).
  • Loss, Win at home v St Johnstone last year.
  • Only 3 away wins v the top 7 for St Johnstone. The 3 wins saw both teams scored.
  • No clear patterns from last season.

16:00 - Esbjerg v Randers - 2.64 Randers

  • 2 consecutive 0-0's in head to heads.
  • 3 matches into the season.
  • A draw and 2 defeats for Esbjerg. They have scored in each match. They have conceded 3 goals in each of their last 2 matches.
  • Loss v Brondby, draw away v Horsens and 1-0 win v Odense for Randers.
  • Both sides have yet to have a 0-0 at halftime.

19:00 - Vejle v FC Midtjylland - 1.9 FC Midtjylland

  • Last head to heads were in 2009.
  • A win and 2 draws for Vejle this season saw both teams score. 2 consecutive 1-1 draws.
  • Draw, Loss, win for FC Midtjylland. They have scored and conceded in their last 2 matches.
  • The head to heads give us little. There is a both teams scoring pattern but remember that's only 3 matches.

16:00 - Brommapojkarna v Dalkurd FF - 2.54 Bromma

  • 3-0 Dalkurd in the last head to head.

Bromma (15th)

  • 5 losses and a 0-0 draw last 6 matches.
  • Only 3 clean sheets.
  • Only 1 0-0 all season.
  • Wins came at home v 4th, 9th and 10th but losses v 12th and 13th at home suggests Bromma are unreadable.
  • 7 of 8 goals conceded at home came 2nd half.

Dalkurd (16th)

  • Only 2 wins, 1 came v Bromma at home 4 matches ago.
  • Only 4 under 2.5 goals matches.
  • Only 2 clean sheets.
  • Scored and conceded in 9 of their last 11 matches.
  • Conceded in their last 8 away matches.
  • Not played the bottom 4 away yet.

  • The bottom 2 and the market cannot pick a winner. There is a question mark here with Dalkurd's gap in form away v the bottom 4. Dalkurd beat Bromma at home recently.
  • I would take on any 0-0 late on.

16:00 - Kalmar FF v IFK Goteborg - 2.14 Kalmar FF

  • Kalmar won the last 2 head to heads.

Kalmar FF (9th)

  • Only 1 win in 7 matches came v IFK Goteborg, a 1-3 away win.
  • 3 consecutive defeats.
  • 2 consecutive home defeats.
  • Conceded in their last 7 matches.
  • No 0-0.
  • Only 1 0-0 at halftime at home.
  • 3 home wins v 6th, 12th and 13th, 3-0, 1-0, 1-0.
  • 5 wins in 6 matches v 11th and lower.

IFK Goteborg (11th)

  • Only 1 draw.
  • Only 2 wins in 8 matches came at home.
  • Conceded in their last 7 away matches.
  • Only 2 0-0's at halftime away.
  • No 0-0.
  • Only 2 losses home and away v 8th and lower, one of those defeats were v Kalmar.
  • 100% over 1.5 goals away.

  • Lay any late 0-0. Neither side have seen a 0-0 this season. Kalmar's only recent win was v IFK Goteborg.
  • Lay the 0-0 in the halftime score market.
  • Too tough to call otherwise.

16:00 - Osters v Varbergs BoIS - 1.64 Osters

  • 5 consecutive Osters wins in head to heads, conceding in each of those wins.

Osters (7th)

  • 4 wins and a 0-0 in their last 4 matches.
  • Scored 2+ goals in 5 of their last 6 matches.
  • Failed to score in only 3 matches.
  • All wins bar 1 came v 10th and lower, 5 of those wins came away.

Varbergs (14th)

  • No win in 10 matches.
  • Conceded in their last 10 matches and last 7 away.
  • Conceded 2+ goals in each of their last 4 matches.
  • No 0-0.
  • Only 1 0-0 at halftime away.
  • Not beaten a top 9 side, 7 of those 10 matches came at home.

  • 71% over 2.5 goals for both sides - expect goals.
  • An argument for Osters today scoring 2+ goals again today, perhaps conceding, but not losing.
  • On form, expect Osters not to lose.

18:00 - Degerfors v Jonkopings Sodra - 1.61 Degerfors

  • 1-1 and 2-2 in the last 2 head to heads.

Degerfors (8th)

  • Only 1 win in 5 matches.
  • Scored and conceded in 8 of their last 10 matches.
  • Only 2 clean sheets.
  • Failed to score in only 3 matches.
  • Conceded in their last 7 at home.
  • No 0-0.
  • Only 2 0-0's at halftime at home.
  • All defeats have come v the top 6.
  • A clear set of form. Defeats v top 6, draws v 7th-10th, wins v 11th and lower.

Jonkopings (10th)

  • Scored and conceded in their last 4 matches.
  • 4 wins in 5 away matches.
  • No draw in 7 away matches.
  • Scored and conceded in their last 4 matches.
  • Only 2 0-0's at halftime away.
  • 5 2-1 scorelines away, 3 wins and 2 defeats.
  • 7 of 9 goals scored away came 2nd half.

  • If Degerfors continue their readable form, we are headed for a score draw!
  • 2-2 could be a tradable scoreline today. Both teams are scoring and conceding. Jonkopings collect 2-1 scorelines away.
  • Lay the 0-0 in the halftime score market.

A league I'd ordinarily leave alone. Zenit St Petersburg and CSKA Moscow are well worth a mention. It is early in the Russian Season. Zenit below are well worth keeping on your radar this afternoon.

12:00 - Ural Ekaterinburg v FK Krasnodar - 2.28 FK Krasnador

  • 1-1 and 0-1 FK in the last 2 head to heads.
  • Both sides lost their openers.

15:30 - Zenit St Petersburg v Arsenal Tula - 1.32 Zenit

  • 0-1 Tula and 3-3 last 2 head to heads.
  • The market expects normal service to resume today for Zenit.
  • Zenit provided a good trading angle in their opener away to newly promoted Yenisey. 81st and 85th minute goals for Zenit saw a 0-2 win in a match where you'd have profited if keeping the faith that this established Premier League side would eventually unlock the newcomers Yenisey.
  • Tula at home held Dinamo Moscow to a 0-0.

18:00 - Lokomotiv v Spartak Moscow - 2.76 Spartak Moscow

  • A Moscow derby. 2.76 the favourite. Early in the Russian Season.

20:30 - Longford v Athlone - 1.12 Longford

  • Longford are comfortable at home v the bottom 2 (Athlone are bottom). They have scored 3-3-5 goals in wins at home v the bottom 2. That fits in perfectly with the expectation from a 1.12 odds quote.
  • 100% losses away for Athlone.
  • Very straightforward and should be goal-laden.

The Austrian Bundesliga is another peripheral European League which we follow throughout the season, particular with 2 of the teams below, Rapid Vienna and Red Bull Salzburg. Both sides have tended to be reliable sorts, and that is good news for the trader.

16:00 - Rapid Vienna v SCR Altach - 1.26 Rapid Vienna

  • 0-0 and 4-1 Rapid Vienna in the last 2 head to heads.
  • A 0-3 win in their opener for Rapid Vienna and a 2-3 home defeat for Altach.
  • All of Rapid's goals were scored first half.
  • You might want to lay the 0-0 in the halftime score market if no goal after 15 minutes.

17:00 - FC Wacker Innsbruck v Sturm Graz - 2.14 Sturm Graz

  • Last head to heads were 2013 and 2014. Wacker newly promoted.
  • Wacker took the lead in their opener but lost 2-1 to Austria Vienna. A successful trade if I remember rightly taking on the newcomers. I think I went with the lay of Wacker halftime market which paid off with an Austria Vienna 39th minute equaliser.
  • Sturm Graz came from a goal down  to 2-1, then 2-2, then 3-2 win.
  • If Wacker score first, lay them? Although we do not know how they will be at home in their new season in the top league.

17:00 - Mattersburg v Red Bull Salzburg - 1.49 Red Bull Salzburg

  • Both of these sides scored 3 goals in their openers. They both also conceded.
  • 2-2 and 1-0 Salzburg in the last 2 head to heads.

A league well worth following, particularly FC Basel and the Young Boys who will provide ample trading angles throughout the season.

18:00 - FC Basel v Grasshoppers Zurich - 1.54 FC Basel

  • 0-0, 0-2 Basel and 1-0 Basel the last 3 head to heads. Yet to concede in 3 matches.
  • Basel have conceded in their 2 matches this season, 1 1-2 loss and a 1-1 draw. Yet again we see a Basel side slow out of the blocks, as they were after the Winter Break last season. They really must win now, being already 5 points shy of the top 2 sides after only 2 matches.
  • Grasshoppers lost 2-0 to Young Boys and FC Zurich who happen to be the top 2 at the moment.
  • We should expect Basel to replicate this 2-0 . It really is must-win territory for them, even this early in the season.

18:00 - Luzern v Lugano - 2.24 Luzern

  • 1-2 and 2-0 Luzern in the last 2 head to heads.

  • 2 consecutive defeats this season, conceding 2 goals.
  • A win and a loss for Lugano.
  • A chance for Luzern to end their losing run if the head to heads continue?

18:00 - Ranheim v Rosenborg - 1.91 Rosenborg

  • 1-1 last head to head. Head to heads prior to that largely friendlies.

Ranheim (4th)

  • 4 of 5 losses this season came away from home.
  • Only 2 clean sheets.
  • 4 consecutive home wins.
  • Scored 2+ goals in each of their last 5 home matches.
  • No 0-0 at halftime at home.
  • No 0-0.
  • Only home loss v 1st in the league - scored 2+ goals v the rest.
  • 100% over 1.5 goals at home.

Rosenborg (2nd)

  • Only 3 defeats, 2 came away.
  • 3 consecutive wins.
  • Failed to score only in the first match of the season.
  • 5 0-0's at halftime away.
  • Not played the top 4 away yet. Scored 2 goals only once away in 8 matches.

  • A slight gap in form with Rosenborg not playing top 4 sides away. Strictly on form, I can see a positive from Ranheim today.
  • Yes their only home loss v 1st in the league, but they are scoring 2 goals regularly.
  • I would lay Rosenborg if Rosenborg scored first, given their troubles scoring 2 goals.I would note the 62% 0-0's at halftime away for Rosenborg. If 0-0 at halftime, I'd expect 2nd half goals.

15:00 - HJK Helsinki v RoPS - 1.39 HJK

  • 2-3 RoPS and 1-2 HJK last 2 head to heads.

HJK (1st)

  • Only 3 defeats, 2 came at home.
  • Scored 2+ goals in 10 of their last 12 matches.
  • Failed to score in only 2 matches.
  • 7 consecutive home wins.
  • Scored 2+ goals in each of their last 7 at home.
  • 21 of 26 goals scored at home came 2nd half.
  • 11 goals scored last 15 mins of home matches.

RoPS (2nd)

  • 2 losses in their last 3 matches.
  • Scored in their last 5 away.
  • 2 away defeats  v 7th and 9th.

  • If HJK are to be vulnerable, you'd expect it to be v 2nd. But RoPs are going to have to stop HJK scoring 2+ goals as they have done at home last 7 matches.
  • RoPS may get a goal but I would say without winning the match so that's my angle today.
  • HJK have scored a whopping 11 goals in the last 15 minutes of home matches so if losing or drawing come the 75th minute, take a chance on another late HJK goal?

15:00 - FC Inter v IFK Mariehamn - 2.04 FC Inter

  • 2-4 Inter and 2-3 Inter in the last 2 head to heads.

FC Inter (8th)

  • 3 consecutive wins.
  • 3 losses in the last 4 home matches.
  • Only 2 0-0's at halftime at home.

IFK Mariehamn (10th)

  • Only 2 wins in 12 matches.
  • Only 2 clean sheets.
  • 4 consecutive away defeats.
  • Conceded in their last 9 away matches.
  • Conceded 2+ goals in each of their last 4 away matches.
  • 5 of 7 goals scored away came 2nd half.

  • IFK to concede today? That's a ready angle.

Still early in the season so no real form to speak of. Note the odds and note the in-play stats. It's a league worth following when it fleshes out.

17:00 - Eupen v Charleroi - 2.74 Charleroi

  • After 2 2-2's in head to heads, Eupen won 1-0 last head to head.
  • 2.74 odds tells us this is best left to in-play stats. Both sides lost their season opener.

19:00 - Antwerp v KV Kortrijk - 1.88 Antwerp

  • 2 consecutive KV wins in head to heads, scoring 4 goals in each.
  • Antwerp won their opener 0-1 away, KV lost 1-4 at home to Anderlecht.

19:00 - Cercle Brugge v Lokeren - 2.02 Cercle Brugge

  • Last 2 head to heads were friendlies.
  • 0-0 for Cercle in their opener, 0-4 loss for Lokeren v Racing Genk in their opener.

19:30 - Gent v Zulte-Waregem - 1.8 Gent

  • 0-1 Zulte and 0-1 Gent in the last 2 head to heads.
  • 3-2 loss for Gent v Standard in their opener. 2-2 for Zulte in their opener.
  • Goals today? (despite the head to heads!)
